Joe Pranevich's Bibliography

In Print:

Linux Journal Wonderful World of Linux 2.2
First Published by: Slashdot
Completed: 01/26/99
Reprinted by Linux Journal: Dec 1998 (pre-release version)

An article describing features new to Linux 2.2. This is my first article published in "print", and my first technical article published. This article was picked up and reprinted by a number of other magazines and sources. This article was revised many times as the feature-set was not complete until Linux 2.2 was actually released.

Linux 2.2 and Framebuffer Consoles
First Published by: Slashdot (8/12/98)
Reprinted by Linux Journal: Apr 1999

A long explanation about the Framebuffer consoles present in Linux 2.2. A version of this article was originally published on Slashdot as "fbcon and Linux 2.2."

Adventure in the Colossal Cave
Published by Linux Journal: Sep 1999 (online supplement)

A trip down memory lane from the origins of adventure gaming to the present which started as a retro-review of "adventure" which was still shipping with new Linux distributions at the time. (Sadly, the major vendors no longer consider it essential.) This was my first non-technical article published.

Bullet Points: Linux 2.4
Published by Linux Journal: Jan 2000

A summary of the then-current state of Linux 2.4 for Linux Journal. Linux Journal asked me for deeper content than the "Wonderful World" articles for the 2.4 series. It was part one of a series.

Linux 2.4 Spotlight: ISA Plug-and-Play
Published by Linux Journal: Feb 2000

A very brief summary of the new support for ISA Plug-and-Play devices in Linux 2.4. This was written as a direct followup to the "Bullet Points" article above.

Contributing to the Linux Kernel: Diff and Patch
Published by Linux Journal: Jun 2000

My second attempt at diversification for Linux Journal. This was an introductory text on diff and patch, especially for submitting modifications to open source projects. Of course, since most of my articles were placed in their "Kernel Korner" column, this one also developed a kernel bent. (First in a two part series.)

Bullet Points: Linux 2.4 Part Deux
Published by Linux Journal: Jul 2000

A list of the noteworthy features of Linux 2.4 added since the earlier "bullet points" article.

Contributing to the Linux Kernel: The Kernel Configuration System
Published by Linux Journal: Aug 2000

Guide for writing changes to the kernel configuration system as it shipped with Linux 2.2 and 2.4. (Linux 2.6 has a different system.) This may have been the closest the old kernel build language got to formal documentation.
Byte Russia
Wonderful World of Linux 2.4
First Published by: Linux Today

My "Wonderful World of Linux 2.4" article (which did not see print in the US because of an agreement I made with Linux Today) translated into Russian and printed in the Russian edition of "Byte" magazine. This was the only article I wrote which was reprinted in another language (on paper). (The same article was also translated into German for Lan Line magazine.)
Lan Line (German)
Wonderful World of Linux 2.4
First Published by: Linux Today

Same as above. This is my "Wonderful World of Linux 2.4" article translated into German and reprinted by Lan Line magazine.

Online Publications:

Slashdot
Wonderful World of Linux 2.2
First Published by: Slashdot (1/26/1999)
Reprinted by Linux Journal: Dec 1998 (pre-release version)

An article describing features new to Linux 2.2. This is my first article published in "print", and my first technical article published. This article was picked up and reprinted by a number of other magazines and sources. This article was revised many times as the feature-set was not complete until Linux 2.2 was actually released.

Although first published by Slashdot, it was mirrored by a large number of other online sites including Linux Today, Linux Weekly News, Kernel Notes, Linux Gazette, and others.

Linux 2.2 and Framebuffer Consoles
(Original title: "Fbcon and Linux 2.2")
First Published by: Slashdot (8/12/98)
Reprinted by Linux Journal: Apr 1999

A long explanation about the Framebuffer consoles present in Linux 2.2. A version of this article was originally published on Slashdot as "fbcon and Linux 2.2."
Linux Today
Wonderful World of Linux 2.4
First Published by: Linux Today (9/14/1999) (first revision)

An article describing the new features in Linux 2.4 and obviously a sequel to the 2.2 one. The first revisions were done without compensation (like everything else I write, pretty much), but Linux Today sponsored it so that I could keep it up to date. As such, it was not published in print form in the US.

Moving to a Linux World
First Published by: Linux Today (12/21/1999)

An article aimed at closed source companies planning to build applications for Linux for the first time, discussing some of the obstacles and choices that have to be made, as well as some of the things done on Windows that wouldn't fly under Linux. (Reading it again, I note that a number of open source applications are now doing some of the "don't". Oh well.)

Why Linux 2.4 is Not Delayed
First Published by: Linux Today (5/5/2000)

An explanation about the Linux release process and why Linux does not use announced release dates. This was written in counterpoint to several "Linux 2.4 delayed" stories. Looking back now, it obviously was taking longer to develop than expected but still not "delayed" per se.

On Attribution, Translations, and Plagiarism
First Published by: Linux Today (5/30/2000)

This article was my hastily written response to an incident where an article of mine had been copied into Spanish with giving attribution to someone else. Not one of my better ones, really. (Part one in a series of two.)

On Attribution, Translations, and Plagiarism II: The (No So) Dramatic Conclusion
First Published by: Linux Today (7/7/2000)

The conclusion to the previous piece. The short story: everyone lives happily ever after and I decide that I over-reacted. Included here only for completeness. (Part two in a series of two.)

FreshMeat
Blame the UI: Why Linux is Not Immune from ILOVEYOU-style Attacks
First Published by: Freshmeat (6/10/2000)

For me, this was even topical. I discuss the real issues causing the Outlook attack and why Linux can't affort to be snobish about it. This was one written too quickly for my feelings now, I wish I would have rewritten it. Oh well.

Fun Stuff:

After Y2K
Wonderful World of Linux 3.0 - Abacus World Expo
First Published by: Linux Today /After Y2K (10/20/1999)

Linux after the milennium bug (on abacuses.) Just my way of poking a little fun at myself. Got a little bit more attention that I would have liked, frankly. (I wrote it on a whim in the middle of the night.) It was based on the After Y2K webcomic (written in 1999) which had post-apocolypse geeks doing computing on abacuses, Martha Stewart trying to take over the world, and "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" released as a puppet show. Very weird.
Ultima Dragons Internet Chapter
Ultima I Walkthrough (In Three Parts)
Completed: 05/02/95
First Published by: Ultima Dragons
Published on Documentation CD by Electronic Arts ("Ultima Collection")

A walkthrough that I wrote to the game "Ultima" back in high school that got put up by the Ultima Dragons. I wouldn't even include it here, but it was later reprinted (without my by-line, unfortunately) as the official walkthrough to Ultima I on the "Ultima Collection" CD by Electronic Arts. This is also the first thing I ever wrote for internet publication, back in '95. Memories...
